The Blueprint

5 Steps to Start
Writing Your Book

Every published author followed some version of these steps. Now it's your turn.

💡
Step 01
Choose Your One Idea
You don't need a perfect idea — you need ONE clear idea. Ask yourself: "What is this book about in one sentence?" If you can't answer that, you're not ready to write yet. Stay here until you can.
📌 The Idea Test: Tell someone your book idea verbally. If their eyes light up, you have something. If they look confused, simplify.
⏱ 1–3 days
📝 Notebook exercise

Step 02
Outline — Just the Big Chapters
Don't plan every word. Just map the journey. For non-fiction: What are the 8–12 key lessons? For fiction: What are the 5–8 major turning points? That's your outline. That's all you need to begin.
📌 The Sticky Note Method: Write each chapter idea on a separate sticky note. Arrange and rearrange on a wall. Move them physically — it rewires how you think about structure.
⏱ 2–5 days
🗂 Sticky notes / Notion

Step 03
Choose Your Writing Space
Your brain needs a trigger. When you sit in your writing chair, your brain should know: "This is writing time." A corner of your bedroom, a café, a library — it doesn't matter. Pick one. Go there consistently.
📌 The Ritual Rule: Same place + same time + same opening ritual (a specific tea, a specific playlist) = your brain writes on autopilot within 3 weeks.
⏱ Immediate
☕ Build your ritual
Step 04
Write Your Minimum Viable Word Count
Pick a number so small you feel embarrassed. 200 words. 300 words. That's it. The goal is not to write brilliantly — the goal is to show up. Every. Single. Day. Streaks are more powerful than marathons.
📌 The 200-Word Rule: Open your document. Write 200 words. If you stop there, that's perfect. If you write more, that's a bonus. But 200 words minimum — no excuses, no exceptions.
⏱ Daily habit
🎯 200–500 words

Step 05
Never Edit While You Write
Editing brain and writing brain are two different people. When you write and edit simultaneously, both do a terrible job. Write the full chapter first — even if it's garbage. Close the file. Come back in 48 hours to edit.
📌 The Delete Key Rule: For the first draft, cover your screen with a cloth after each session. No reading back. Just write forward. The inner critic is not invited to the first draft.
⏱ Lifelong rule
🧠 First draft = brain dump

Avoid These

Mistakes Every Beginner
Makes (And How to Skip Them)

Waiting to Be "Ready"
Nobody is ever ready. Every published author started before they felt ready.
✅ Start today. Edit tomorrow.
🎯
Trying to Write Perfectly
Perfection in a first draft is a myth invented by people who don't finish books.
✅ Done > perfect. Always.
📢
Telling Everyone Too Early
Premature sharing releases the energy you need to actually finish the book.
✅ Write 10,000 words before you tell anyone.
📖
Planning Too Much
Outlining 40 chapters before writing chapter 1 is procrastination in disguise.
✅ Outline 3 chapters ahead. No more.
🔁
Re-Reading What You Wrote
Reading back kills momentum. Write forward, always. Edit only when the chapter is complete.
✅ No looking back until the chapter is done.
💭
Writing for Critics
The imaginary critic in your head has published 0 books. Don't give them a vote.
✅ Write for your ideal reader. No one else.
"You don't start writing because you're ready.
You become ready by starting to write."
